Speak Out!

Ask the Advocate

I think I'm autistic. Can you give me more information about what I should do?

You probably would like to start with a good evaluation. That evaluation should give specific recommendations based on your strengths and needs. If you live outside of Pennsylvania you can visit our national partner at www.NMHA.org or the Autism Research Institute site at  www.autism.com In Pennsylvania you can look for information on the PA Department of Public Welfare, Bureau of Autism Services website or call them at 866-497-6898 to learn more about what services are available in your area.

There are many resources on this site. The Frequently Asked Questions gives you information about how to qualify, if you are over or under 21. If you are under 21, you can get a free evaluation from your county.

If you are over 21, you could get an evaluation from your state Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, but there is about a 6 month wait. This office gives free evaluation and job training to persons with disabilities. You can find your office here

There is a lot of good information on the internet. Many adults have been able to use the internet to communicate their personal perspectives about having autism.

Temple Grandin is perhaps the first person with autism to write about her experiences. She is a professor of Animal Science.  Her websites have a lot of great information about autism. Go to www.templegrandin.com  and www.autism.org/temple/inside.html

Another adult with autism has used the web and technology to share her view of life with the world. You can watch Amanda's video at The Truth About Autism: Scientists Reconsider What They Think They Know

Here is an article referring to Amanda's video and describing some of the controversies regarding autistic consciousness.
